June 2006

A painter, a poet, and a singer all walk into a bar…
But, seriously, folks, this month it's all about creativity. We've got ways to show off your dramatic skills for dad, to sing your heart out with friends, and to use your imagination to create a little excitement "just because". So get going… let's show off those liberal arts skills this month!

Father's Day

What can we say about dad? No, really, what can we say about dad? This Father's Day, we say skip the tie and instead, create a whirlwind of words that will tell dad how you really feel about him.

Start with a list of words describing dad (the youngest children may need a little help). Brainstorm everything from the best to the worst to the silliest qualities of your dad. Then choose one of our following five ways to use your list to celebrate him when Father's Day rolls around:

• Charades -- Act out each word for dad (and any other family members) to guess.

• Photography -- Search high and low for photographs where dad is demonstrating the particular qualities on your list (one photograph for each word). Paste the photos (or color copies of the photos) into a pre-bound book from a scrapbook store. Print each word below the corresponding photo.

• Writing -- Write a poem (or a story) about "Super Dad" or "Hero Dad" or "Wild and Crazy Dad". Use every word from your list at least once. Take the final draft and copy it into a pre-bound book from a scrapbook store, or print the text from your computer and paste it into the book.

• Acting -- Take your writing one step further and create an after-dinner theatre performance for dad, complete with tickets and a program.

• Drawing -- Draw or paint a large-scale picture of dad that demonstrates one or more of the qualities on the list. Add the list of words by pasting it on, collage-like, or writing them in and around the picture. Have the picture framed.

Rock'n'Roll Video Party

Who says you have to be a rock star to make a music video? Here at Celebration Style, one of our most popular children's parties has always been the Rock Star Video Party. So anyone searching for a great way to celebrate a birthday indoors this summer (because it's just too hot in Arizona) should read on, because it's not every day we give our best secrets away!

• Assemble a collection of outrageous clothing for the kids to wear. Be sure to have plenty on hand so that they can have several "costume changes". Some great sources are your own closet and those of family and friends, old Halloween costumes, and thrift stores. When you're searching, keep in mind that some of the most mundane looking (to you) clothes can be rock star material for a kid. Think old concert t-shirts, anything with sequins or feathers, boots, scarves, fancy hats, old sunglasses -- you name it.

• Pick up some fake microphones at your local party store. And if you can borrow a set of drums or an old guitar, go for it (but they're really not necessary, as most of the "stars" will pefer to be singers anyway).

• Select a "studio" spot in your house. It should be an area with plenty of room to move around. Transfer a bit of furniture into another room if need be. The "studio" should have a simple backdrop -- a plain wall is great, but if you don't have that, hang up a sheet or an old paint dropcloth (the added paint splatters will give your studio that "rock star" ambience).

• Rent a karaoke machine or just purchase a couple of karaoke CDs of songs the kids already know.

Then make sure your video camera is charged and let the kids do their own thing. Before you know it, you'll have several music videos to view over pizza and soda afterward. We guarantee everyone will be raving about this party for years! (Don't forget to send your guests home with a DVD copy of the music videos -- or enclose copies with your thank you notes).

Not-So-Special Celebration

We'll make this one short and sweet. The next time you go out to dinner with your family, your friends, or even just your eight-year-old, pick a restaurant that's known to help celebrate special occasions. Then have the servers bring dessert, or sing, or do whatever it is they do, for your dinner guests. Let your companions know that you just want to celebrate them and all that they mean to you.

Celebrate everyone, every day. It's that simple.
